Chris Pine faced adversity in his early days in Hollywood, grappling with acne during the onset of his career.
During a recent installment of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Pine disclosed that he endured “terrible skin” in his youth and post-college years, highlighting the misconception that acne is exclusively a teenage affliction. For him, it was “extremely incapacitating emotionally.”
Reflecting on his experience, Pine described it as “one of the most distressing periods of my life,” but acknowledged it as integral to his journey.
The conversation arose when podcast host Josh Horowitz mentioned comments made by “The O.C.” casting director Patrick Rush in Alan Sepinwall’s 2023 book “Welcome to The O.C.: The Oral History.”
Rush disclosed that Pine had auditioned for the role of Ryan Atwood in the series but cited his “severely troubled skin” as a hindrance. Ultimately, the part went to actor Ben McKenzie.
Pine candidly expressed his discomfort with Rush’s remarks being included in the book, stating, “I don’t think it was necessary for him to bring it up.”
While acknowledging the industry’s preference for aesthetically pleasing actors, Pine maintained a gracious perspective. He noted, “I'm not saying I’m glad I didn’t get that role… but I’m content.”
Despite setbacks, Pine flourished in Hollywood, earning acclaim for his portrayal of Captain Kirk in the rebooted “Star Trek” series and featuring in acclaimed films like “Don’t Worry Darling” and “Hell or High Water.”
His journey serves as a testament to resilience. Pine emphasized, “I understand the despair it can induce and the depths of misery it can plunge you into,” but he remains optimistic, affirming, “But there is hope on the horizon.”
