While enthusiasm surrounding the metaverse may be waning, certain influential figures perceived as shaping the future of digital interactions continue to flourish. In 2023, Roblox witnessed a 26% uptick in revenue compared to the previous year, alongside a 22% surge in daily active users and a staggering 60 billion hours of engagement on its platform. These outcomes solidify Roblox's status as a crucial emerging platform for brands aiming to engage with youthful consumers.

Roblox is progressing towards engaging with Madison Avenue by announcing the availability of immersive video advertisements to all advertisers. Initially introduced in November, immersive video ads have undergone testing by brands such as E.l.f. Beauty and Walmart. The broader implementation coincides with various initiatives related to measurement, including fresh collaborations with Integral Ad Science (IAS) and Kantar. These developments follow recent appointments of executives, signaling the platform's expanding advertising aspirations.

According to executives, the new video ads offer marketers a scalable means of reaching Roblox's predominantly Gen Z audience without the necessity of developing customized 3D content. This launch expands on the introduction of portal ads and introduces new metrics, such as cost per transport, which hold relevance within a 3D gaming environment.

Stephanie Latham, Roblox's vice president of global brand partnerships, remarked, "We've received feedback from numerous brands indicating that we possess a highly engaged, yet challenging-to-access Gen Z audience spending millions of hours on our platform. They sought a method to reach them with minimal obstacles. Immersive video ads allow us to substantially reduce entry barriers and grant them unrestricted access to this audience they're eager to engage with."

Striking a balance

More than half of Roblox's 71.5 million daily active users belong to Generation Z, a demographic renowned for its skepticism towards conventional advertising methods. Incorporating immersive video ads into a platform celebrated for gaming and community development necessitated a delicate balance between the demands of users, brands, and developers.

"We dedicated considerable effort to innovation to ensure that our creations not only function effectively within our distinctive environment but also resonate with advertisers by providing easily accessible assets, such as 15-second videos," Latham explained. "With our flourishing virtual economy, we aim to seamlessly integrate real-world elements for Gen Z, facilitating a frictionless blend between the two realms."

Roblox's endeavors have yielded positive results thus far. According to an audience impact and brand lift study conducted by the platform in collaboration with Latitude, three-quarters of users expressed a greater likelihood of noticing brands advertised on Roblox compared to those advertised elsewhere. The study also revealed that video ads on Roblox contributed to increased awareness, consideration, social media engagement, and website visits across various metrics.

"Video ads present an exclusive opportunity for our clients to introduce their brands to Generation Z consumers on a global scale within popular immersive environments, ensuring safety and scalability," remarked Cara Lewis, chief investment officer of Dentsu International, a participant in the initiative's testing phase.

Behind the scenes

The new video ads are now accessible via Roblox's self-serve Ads Managers and will soon be accessible through programmatic media purchasing. Advertisers can tailor their purchases utilizing genre targeting, brand suitability, and audience estimator functionalities. Later this year, they will have the option to purchase completed views, a feature presently undergoing beta testing.

Roblox has also disclosed collaborations with IAS and Kantar concerning measurement. IAS is set to offer 3D in-experience Viewability and Invalid Traffic measurement in intricate environments later this year, ensuring that ads stimulate genuine engagement. This marks a pioneering integration, according to press materials.

"IAS is committed to aiding advertisers wherever they operate, including delivering distinctive, impactful ad measurement solutions across emerging platforms like immersive 3D environments," stated Lisa Utzschneider, CEO of IAS.

Concurrently, Kantar's Context Lab will serve as an interim solution for brand lift studies as Roblox endeavors to integrate with various brand lift partners. Additionally, Roblox has recently partnered with PubMatic to enhance programmatic media purchasing capabilities. These partnerships underscore the significance of measurement for advertisers, a fundamental aspect for new advertising platforms, regardless of the outcomes of tests and trials.

"Until you can substantiate it in a manner that empowers brands to make investment decisions based on the results they observe, I don't believe you attain scale or product-market fit," emphasized Latham. "The involvement of measurement partners is paramount to ensuring that we demonstrate the value of every dollar spent on the platform."

Roblox's enhancements to its advertising operations are reinforced by recent strategic appointments. Ben Fox, previously associated with Yahoo and King Advertising, has assumed the role of vice president of operations for partnerships at Roblox, while David Vespe, formerly a lead engineer on Google's demand gen product, has been appointed head of ads engineering. This intensified focus on advertising coincides with Roblox's endeavor to sustain marketer interest in its platform, notwithstanding shifts in metaverse investment to domains such as generative artificial intelligence.

"The manner in which Gen Z, particularly, engages, communicates, plays, learns... all of that unfolds in real-time on Roblox. This confirms to us that this platform is the next significant media outlet for our entire industry," asserted Latham. "The behaviors observed there are only intensifying, a trend that necessitates collective engagement from all stakeholders."
