Apple reported first-quarter revenue of $90.8 billion on Thursday, marking a 4% decline year over year. The tech giant continues to grapple with growth obstacles, especially in China, amid an uncertain economic climate.
In the wake of a 10% drop in iPhone sales, Apple unveiled a $110 billion share repurchase program, its largest ever. This downturn suggests sluggish demand for the iPhone 15 series, released in September.
For the quarter ending March 31, iPhone sales totaled $45.96 billion, slightly below projections. Apple's net income for the period dipped to $23.6 billion, a modest decrease from the previous year.
Mac sales saw a 4% uptick, reaching $7.5 billion, while services revenue hit $23.9 billion, surpassing analyst expectations.
During the earnings call, CEO Tim Cook accentuated positive aspects of the latest period and hinted at forthcoming revelations regarding the company's vision for generative AI in the upcoming weeks.
In contrast, iPad revenue plummeted 17% year over year to $5.6 billion. This news precedes an imminent press event where Apple is anticipated to unveil updates to its iPad lineup and related accessories.
Nonetheless, the company anticipates double-digit growth in its iPad business and services for the June quarter.
Revenue from Apple's wearables, home, and accessories segment, including AirPods, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro, reached $7.91 billion, falling short of the estimated $8.28 billion despite the Vision Pro launch.
This earnings report marks the debut since the release of Apple's most significant new product in years, the $3,499 mixed reality Vision Pro headset. An
analysis indicates that Apple invested billions in research and development for the device.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently revised forecasts for the headset, indicating a reduction in production by several hundred thousand units.
Cook disclosed that approximately 50% of Fortune 100 companies have acquired a Vision Pro headset to explore new possibilities.
Following the report, Apple shares surged over 7% in after-hours trading.
Problems in China
Apple's momentum has waned notably in China due to a combination of nationalism, economic challenges, and heightened competition over recent months. Nonetheless, Cook noted during the call that iPhone sales have risen in mainland China in the latest quarter.
However, Chinese manufacturers like Huawei and Xiaomi have made significant strides, attracting consumers who previously would have considered Apple, opting instead for national brands.
According to market research firm IDC, Apple witnessed a remarkable 10% decline in smartphone shipments globally in the first quarter of this year.
"Apple's decline is substantial, but considering the resilience shown over the past four years, it has weathered supply chain disruptions and macroeconomic hurdles better than its counterparts," remarked Nabila Popal, research director at IDC, in an interview with CNN.
Nevertheless, on Thursday, Cook highlighted that the company achieved record-breaking revenue in over a dozen regions, including the Middle East, Canada, Spain, and Turkey.
In 2024, Apple's stock price has dropped by over 8%, falling below $170 per share, having previously reached nearly $200 per share at various points over the past year. Despite encountering numerous obstacles and challenges, Apple has consistently surged ahead, boasting a market capitalization of $2.6 trillion, solidifying its position as one of the world's largest and most influential companies.
All eyes on AI
Cook hinted at the potential integration of generative-AI capabilities into Apple products soon, acknowledging the company's current lag behind competitors in this realm.
"We view generative AI as a significant opportunity across our product range and feel we possess distinctive advantages in this area," he remarked.
Anticipation mounts for Apple's unveiling of AI-driven features at its yearly Worldwide Developers Conference scheduled for June. Rumors suggest discussions between Apple and OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, regarding the
implementation of an iPhone chatbot.
"As we progress in the coming weeks, we'll delve deeper into this topic," Cook concluded.
