The Gazipur district administration established a three-member panel on Friday to investigate a head-on collision between a passenger and a cargo train at the Joydebpur railway junction in the Outer Signal (Kazibari) vicinity of the district.

This mishap severed Dhaka’s railway connection with the northern region of Bangladesh.

Gazipur's Deputy Commissioner (DC), Abul Fateh Mohammad Safiqul Islam, stated that the committee was assembled to ascertain the cause of the incident and to determine if there was any negligence involved.

He further mentioned that the committee has been tasked with delivering its investigative report within the next forty-eight hours.

Stationmaster Hanif Mia attributed the accident to a signalman's error. Five carriages of the cargo train and four of the passenger train were thrown off track.

Hanif Mia also noted that three compartments of the Tangail Commuter train, along with five from the cargo train, were damaged, and several carriages were derailed.

Following an inspection of the crash site, the deputy commissioner concluded that the mishap occurred due to a signaling mistake. The cargo train was en route to Rangpur, and due to it being a Friday, the number of passengers aboard the Tangail commuter train was relatively low.

Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service, reported that four fire service units promptly responded to the scene and initiated rescue operations upon receiving the alert. Numerous individuals, including the locomotive master (train driver) of the Tangail Commuter, sustained injuries.

Seven of the injured are currently undergoing treatment at Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, while others sought first aid at various pharmacies and clinics independently.
