Britney Spears has settled with her estranged father more than two years post the court-mandated conclusion of a conservatorship granting him authority over her life, their legal representatives confirmed.
The settlement terms remained undisclosed by the attorneys representing the pop icon and her father, as per CNN.
“We've had the privilege of advocating for, safeguarding, and supporting Britney Spears,” stated the singer’s legal counsel, Mathew Rosengart, in a declaration to CNN.
“Ms. Spears is and will forever remain an icon and an extraordinary and courageous artist of historic magnitude,” Rosengart’s declaration added. “Despite the conservatorship's termination in November 2021, her desire for liberation is now truly fulfilled. As per her wish, her freedom now encompasses her no longer being obliged to attend or participate in court proceedings concerning this matter.”
Alex Weingarten, the attorney representing the singer’s father, informed CNN, “Jamie is delighted that this chapter is finally closed.”
“Jamie deeply loves his daughter and labored tirelessly to safeguard her,” Weingarten remarked. “He only wants the best for Britney, nothing less.”
Spears’ conservatorship was dissolved in November 2021. However, legal skirmishes persisted as attorneys for the singer and her father clashed in frequent courtroom appearances over legal fees and allegations of mishandling the conservatorship. Her father consistently refuted the allegations.
The star was placed under court-mandated conservatorship in 2008, with her father serving as her conservator for the majority of the 13-year period, overseeing and managing all aspects of his adult daughter’s finances and healthcare decisions.
A 13-year conservatorship ended in 2021
In June 2021, Spears delivered a powerful testimony, marking her first public address in court over the span of 13 years. She implored the judge to liberate her from the conservatorship, which she characterized as “oppressive.”
During her testimony, Spears alleged that while under the conservatorship, her management coerced her into touring against her wishes, prescribed lithium medication that left her feeling “intoxicated,” and prohibited her from marrying or starting a family as she desired, enforcing the use of an IUD for birth control.
“I simply want my life back. It has been 13 years, and it’s too much,” Spears expressed during the heartfelt hearing.
Following her testimony, Spears gained the right to appoint her own legal representation, departing from the court-appointed attorney she had worked with for the previous 13 years. It was then that she enlisted Rosengart, a former federal prosecutor and legal counsel renowned for his representation of numerous Hollywood figures.
In September 2021, mere months before her conservatorship was terminated, a judge suspended Spears’ father, Jamie, from his role as her conservator.
Since the termination of her conservatorship in November 2021, Spears has been highly active on her social media platforms, frequently sharing videos of herself dancing and composing lengthy messages for her fans. She has released two songs, “Embrace Me” with Elton John, and “Watch Your Step” with Will.i.am. Additionally, she published a bestselling autobiography, “The Soul Within Me.”
In her autobiography, she detailed the “crushing” years under the conservatorship, expressing that she felt “dehumanized.”
“The conservatorship robbed me of my femininity, reducing me to a mere shell,” Spears penned in her memoir. “I was more of a concept than a person on stage. Music had always coursed through my veins and soul; they stole that from me.”
