Australia's Jake Fraser-McGurk smashed 84 off 27 deliveries to propel Delhi Capitals to a total of 257-4 and secure a 10-run victory over Mumbai Indians in another IPL high-scoring encounter on Saturday.
At their home ground, the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi posted their highest-ever score in the T20 tournament, following Punjab Kings' record chase of 262 the day before.
Delhi's previous highest total was 231-4 in 2011 against Punjab Kings. This season, Sunrisers Hyderabad has twice set new IPL benchmarks with scores of 277 and 287.
Despite a valiant 32-ball 63 by Tilak Varma, the five-time champions Mumbai were restricted to 247-9 as Delhi bolstered their playoff aspirations with five wins in 10 matches.
Fraser-McGurk, a 22-year-old Australian batsman making waves in his IPL debut season with three half-centuries in five matches, got off to a flying start with two boundaries and a six off England paceman Luke Wood in a 19-run opening over.
"That's my role, to go out there and score as many as I can and get the team off to a good start," Fraser-McGurk, who boasts a strike rate of 237.50, commented after his blistering innings.
The young talent continued his onslaught, smashing sixes and boundaries to reach his fifty in just 15 balls with a maximum over the ropes, forming a crucial 114-run partnership with opening partner Abishek Porel, who contributed 36.
Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla eventually halted Fraser-McGurk's charge, denying him a century. Fraser-McGurk, who remained unsold in the auction before Delhi acquired him as an injury replacement, fell short of the milestone.
However, Delhi's momentum didn't wane as Shai Hope chipped in with a rapid 41 off 17 balls, skipper Rishabh Pant contributed 29 off 19 deliveries, and Tristan Stubbs remained unbeaten on 48 to further decimate the opposition's bowling attack.
Stubbs unleashed an onslaught, smashing left-arm quick Wood for five boundaries and a six in a 26-run 18th over, guiding Delhi to a formidable total in his 25-ball blitz.
Despite a fighting knock of 46 off 24 balls by skipper Hardik Pandya, Mumbai lost wickets at regular intervals. The IPL giants endured a challenging season after Pandya assumed captaincy from veteran Rohit Sharma and faced criticism across venues.
While Pandya's quickfire innings raised hopes, it was a crucial 70-run partnership between Varma and Tim David, who scored 37 off 17 balls, that briefly revived Mumbai's chances. However, Delhi maintained their composure.
David was dismissed lbw by Mukesh Kumar after hitting a boundary and a six, while Varma was run out at the start of the final over, leaving Mumbai languishing at ninth place in the 10-team table with just three victories.
Medium-pacers Kumar and Rasikh Salam, the impact substitute, claimed three wickets each to spearhead Delhi's bowling effort.
