Recent analysis of the online commerce landscape has unveiled the decline of conventional performance-driven marketing, as sophisticated brand cultivation takes center stage.

The dossier from Nest Commerce discloses that digital brand construction, termed as 'comprehensive funnel performance,' stands as the requisite method to foster awareness and attract patrons across platforms increasingly prioritizing video content, encompassing Meta, TikTok, and Google.

The Briefing, a quarterly synopsis of trends and insights, originates from amalgamated advertising data from Nest’s roster of ecommerce clienteles. It harnesses global ad data from over 40 ecommerce labels, overseeing a media expenditure exceeding £100 million.

Per Nest's statistics, labels integrating awareness or traffic campaigns with performance initiatives witnessed a striking 31% year-over-year (YOY) upsurge in Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) during Q1 2024, juxtaposed with a 32% YOY ROAS decline for those solely reliant on performance.

While Meta's aggregate performance registers a YOY escalation, the trajectory diverges contingent on whether brands engage in upper-funnel endeavors. At present, 9% of Meta spending is channeled into upper-funnel endeavors like awareness and traffic campaigns. This allocation has surged YOY by 356% and 30%, correspondingly, as brands reallocate resources towards fostering long-term growth and incrementality.

The conclusion is evident: Embracing comprehensive funnel performance emerges as a strategic imperative for digital triumph in 2024. The emphasis necessitates long-term investments in brand awareness to cultivate future demand among novel clienteles, alongside driving immediate transactions. Strategies exclusively fixated on performance, reigning supreme for the past 15-20 years, exhibit increasing dormancy.

A video-centric strategy proves pivotal in brand establishment. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels play a pivotal role in nurturing awareness and forging brand identities in this evolving terrain. TikTok, particularly, excelled in Q1, boasting a 37% higher Conversion Rate (CVR) quarter-over-quarter (QoQ). It resonates with diverse demographics, especially younger cohorts, serving as a potent avenue for exploration.

Meanwhile, Instagram Reels continues its ascent in prominence as youthful demographics augment engagement on the platform, while Meta perpetuates investments, with spending soaring by an impressive 217% YOY as the platform attains mainstream status.

A transient window of opportunity prevails on Meta. Although advertisers currently relish reduced CPMs compared to 2023, down by 6%, a recuperating economy in the UK portends a plausible surge. Consequently, brands must expedite efforts to establish brand awareness in anticipation of the impending peak season, anticipated to be more competitive and costly as summer looms.

While UK media buyers savor enhanced Meta performance and reduced CPMs due to diminished competition, the thriving American market fuels heightened advertiser aggression.

Following the pandemic, Meta CPMs witnessed substantial year-on-year growth (30% in 2021 and 32% in 2022) as economic conditions ameliorated. An uptick is also foreseeable against the backdrop of the UK economy rebounding from recession. Similarly, analysis of the last US election unveils a dramatic 38% increase in CPMs during Q4 2020 in the US.

According to Will Ashton, CEO of Nest: "Opportunities abound for forward-thinking retailers embracing a community-centric, comprehensive funnel approach. Numerous brands initially responded to the downturn by curtailing brand investments, a decision they now rue. Unless prolonged economic stagnation is anticipated, prioritizing brand building is imperative now. The current juncture presents a favorable opportunity for investment, with CPMs on Meta and TikTok at a nadir.

"We've received market feedback indicating Meta's challenges – yet this is not corroborated by the data in this report. Our thesis suggests a dichotomy between brands adopting the right versus wrong paid social strategies, with performance-heavy brands grappling with unsustainable acquisition costs. Even if Q4 performance was lackluster, there's room for rectification this year. However, prompt action is imperative; delaying until late Q3 is ill-advised."
