"It would be exceedingly simple to portray Tashi as the antagonist," Zendaya remarked. "Yet, I believe there's a wealth of depth to her character. It became my mission to understand her perspective and, in some way, connect the audience with her."

O'Connor concurs, admitting he experienced compassion for each of the three characters at varying points in the movie.

"It presents a remarkably contemporary view of the intricacies within relationships," he observed. "That interdependence carries both anguish and allure in equal proportions."

Behind the camera

"Challengers" embodies all the expectations audiences hold for a Guadagnino production. Renowned for his works like "Call Me by Your Name," "I Am Love," and "Suspiria," Guadagnino once more presents a visually lavish and emotionally intricate exploration of sexual longing.

For Zendaya, whose passion for the art of cinema has led her to delve deeper into behind-the-scenes involvement, teaming up with Guadagnino opened up fresh avenues.

"The more I immerse myself in front of the lens, the more I relish the perspective from behind it," Zendaya reflected. Besides her leading role, she also boasts a producer's credit on "Challengers."

"Being in Luca's orbit empowered me. It served as a nurturing environment to evolve and truly feel my influence and presence," she expressed.

Zendaya is no novice to the workings behind the camera. Her journey as a producer commenced with "Malcolm & Marie," a romantic drama film from 2021, helmed and scripted by Sam Levinson. Building upon this foundation, she reunited with Levinson, this time as an executive producer for the critically acclaimed HBO series, "Euphoria." (CNN, akin to HBO, falls under the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella.)

The educational journey didn't halt there, as all three actors committed themselves to an intense 12-week tennis regimen led by former professional player turned coach, Brad Gilbert.

"We had to sculpt our physiques to mirror those of professional tennis athletes," Faist recounted. Throughout Gilbert's illustrious career, he received coaching from Andre Agassi, the erstwhile player entangled in a formidable rivalry with Pete Sampras.

According to Faist, the contrasting playing styles of Sampras and Agassi influenced the characterization of Art and Patrick as tennis competitors.

"Andre embodied a bit of rock 'n' roll, whereas Pete epitomized technical precision and methodology. Brad perused the script and found parallels to Art and Patrick's dynamic," he elaborated.

The outcome is an authentically immersive cinematic experience that many cinephiles will undoubtedly applaud.
