Seven individuals have perished, and others are in grave or critical condition following a stabbing spree in a shopping center in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday, as per authorities. The perpetrator, who was gunned down by a solitary officer, was among the deceased, with an infant among the victims of the stabbings.
Anthony Cooke, the Police Commissioner of New South Wales, revealed in a press briefing that the assailant entered the Westfield Bondi Junction mall around 3:20 p.m. local time (1:20 a.m. ET) where he "inflicted harm" on approximately nine individuals by stabbing them with a weapon he possessed. The weapon, he stated, "most likely was a knife."
A representative for New South Wales Ambulance informed NBC News that a nine-month-old infant was "conveyed to Sydney Children's Hospital with a pediatric stab wound."
Cooke mentioned that an inspector in the vicinity was directed to the assailant's whereabouts by members of the public. As she pursued him from behind, Cooke stated that the perpetrator turned, prompting the officer to shoot him.
"She took decisive action, potentially saving numerous lives," he emphasized.
The motives of the perpetrator, Cooke asserted, remained unclear, but he acted alone, and there was no ongoing threat.
Addressing the identical press briefing, Brent Armitage, Assistant Commissioner of NSW Ambulance, disclosed that two additional individuals had been conveyed to hospitals throughout Sydney. Their status remained uncertain.
Footage from surveillance cameras depicted a man sprinting through the mall clutching a lengthy blade. Accounts from regional media depicted pandemonium, with certain shoppers fleeing while others endeavored to intervene. According to reports, certain establishments swiftly lowered their shutters, trapping some individuals indoors to ensure their safety.
Hundreds of individuals were evacuated from the mall.
During a live interview with 9News Sydney, a local broadcaster, a gentleman outside the mall recounted assisting a baby following a woman's stabbing. "The mother approached with the infant and thrust it toward me, with this wound on the baby, it appeared quite severe," he recounted.
Roi Huberman, a sound technician at ABC TV in Australia, relayed to the network that he sought refuge in a store during the ordeal.
"Suddenly, we heard a gunshot or perhaps two, and we were unsure of what to do," he narrated. "Then, the highly capable individual in the store guided us to the rear where it could be secured." Subsequently, she secured the store and escorted them out through the rear exit.
Australia's Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, condemned the attack as "a dreadful act of violence that callously targeted innocent individuals."
During a press briefing, he expressed, "The nation extends our heartfelt condolences and empathy to all those mourning the loss of a loved one. And we offer our support to those who have been harmed."
Albanese hailed the police officer who neutralized the assailant as "indisputably a hero," asserting that "she undoubtedly preserved lives through her actions."
