Getting into character is something that can be all-encompassing for an actor when they're on set.

Accents to refine, facial expressions to hone, and occasionally an entirely fresh appearance courtesy of wardrobe, cosmetics, and hairstyling.

However, more and more, the leading luminaries of Hollywood are expanding their character portrayals to the realm of the red carpet as well.

Zendaya's recent ensembles have all whimsically embraced the tennis motif of her latest movie, Challengers.

Aligning your attire with your cinematic character is termed method dressing, a concept Zendaya highlighted during her BBC One Show appearance last Thursday.

"Style has consistently served as a channel, a mechanism for me - fundamentally, I consider myself to be rather reserved, so it affords me the opportunity to craft this alter ego, this role that I inhabit for the duration," she expressed.

Zendaya disclosed that her foray into method dressing commenced following her role in The Greatest Showman, citing the film as her muse for the practice.

Her spirited interpretation of the lead character's fashion was a significant juncture, demonstrating a grasp of the film's objectives.

The Broadway-inspired production, drawing inspiration from the life of entertainer PT Barnum, meticulously attended to particulars in its extensive wardrobe of 800 outfits, with designer Ellen Mirojnick articulating the directive as "stylish, approachable, and contemporary" at the time—a mandate Zendaya adeptly reflected in her attire.

"We're fortunate to participate in projects with such abundant source material, so why not draw from that," Zendaya shared with the One Show.

Since then, the 27-year-old has curated numerous cinema-inspired ensembles alongside her stylist Law Roach, tailored for productions like Dune and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Her outfits could have easily veered into costume territory rather than fashion, yet Zendaya and Roach have honed her distinctive aesthetic over their collaborative span of more than 13 years.

"I always aim to embody the narrative above all else, and this narrative is exceptionally compelling," Roach remarked to Vogue following the conclusion of the Dune 2 press tour.

"The ensembles served as a continuation of the film's wardrobe. It was deliberate and meaningful," he elaborated.

According to fashion journalist Chloe Burney, she asserts that "dressing in character mode on the red carpet isn't just a tribute to actors' recently concluded projects, but also injects a considerable amount of enjoyment".

Speaking to the BBC, she mentioned she "wouldn't typically be drawn to" Challengers but "Zendaya's tennis-themed ensembles have sparked widespread conversation".

Ms. Burney's preferred ensembles from the promotional circuit include Zendaya's Loewe tennis ball stilettos and bespoke glittery green gown.

In recent months, we've witnessed numerous Hollywood luminaries experimenting with method dressing, with Margot Robbie emerging as a standout example.

Her Barbie-inspired appearances have echoed several of her character's outfits from the movie, with some even drawing inspiration from iconic dolls.

According to Ms. Burney, these outfits have played a significant role in "bringing cultural relevance to a project".

"I lost track of the number of storefronts that turned pink overnight," she remarked.

This trend isn't limited to female stars either—Ryan Gosling embraced the Barbie aesthetic with his red carpet ensembles, definitively proving that pink is a universally flattering color.

Injecting more enjoyment into red carpet affairs is a sentiment that actor and director Sofia Coppola was vocal about in 2018.

Writing in W Magazine, In her commentary, she expressed, "Perusing images from a recent gala event, I couldn't shake the sense of disillusionment it evoked."

She lamented, "The women all blur together—it's a procession of indistinguishable red carpet iterations," she remarked.

She criticized the homogeneity, stating, "Everyone appears uniform, sporting impeccable grooming, designer gowns, and fresh jewelry, as they showcase an array of luxury goods," - it would be intriguing to uncover Coppola's perspective on the evolving trends in red carpet fashion.

Timothée Chalamet donned a striking lavender jumpsuit at the Wonka world premiere.

His ensemble for the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory reboot transformed him into a living embodiment of the iconic chocolate confection.

Jenna Ortega embraced Halloween elegance during the promotion of the Netflix sensation Wednesday.

While many cast members embraced method dressing during the press tour, Ortega's haute couture interpretation of a corpse bride stole the spotlight at the world premiere.

The entire ensemble of The Batman, along with numerous attendees, wholeheartedly embraced method dressing at the film's 2022 premiere.

Robert Pattinson opted for an all-black ensemble, including a suit and overcoat, mirroring the attire of his character, Bruce Wayne. However, the most striking outfit belonged to Zoë Kravitz.

Portraying Catwoman, she selected a black Oscar de la Renta gown accentuated with a sleek cat corset.

Attention to minutiae is crucial for method dressing—an aspect Carey Mulligan meticulously adhered to while promoting Maestro.

In her portrayal of Felicia Bernstein, wife of conductor Leonard Bernstein, she adorned herself in several replicas of 1950s dresses to capture the era in which Maestro is set.

For the Oscars red carpet, she graced the event in a breathtaking fishtail gown, faithfully replicating an original design from 1951—the year Felicia and Leonard Bernstein exchanged vows.
