A Brazilian Supreme Court magistrate instigates an inquiry into Elon Musk following the mogul's announcement of reactivating profiles on X, previously Twitter, which the magistrate had directed to be barred.
Musk tweeted on the platform that the limitations were lifted due to the unconstitutional nature of the court decree.
He further demanded the resignation or impeachment of Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
Failure of X to comply with the directive will result in daily fines of 100,000 reais ($19,774; £15,670).
In his ruling, Justice Moraes asserted that Musk initiated a misinformation campaign against the Supreme Court.
The platform's Global Government Affairs division stated the company couldn't disclose the affected accounts.
However, Musk subsequently tweeted that "X will disclose all requests from [Moraes] and their violation of Brazilian legislation".
The accounts are suspected to be associated with extremist factions, sharing content related to the January 8, 2023 riots when supporters of Brazil's ex-President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the Congress, Supreme Court, and presidential palace.
Justice Moraes rose to prominence for his rulings restricting social media platforms within the nation.
He's also probing Bolsonaro and his allies for their alleged involvement in a coup attempt.
Over the weekend, the former president uploaded a video of his meeting with Musk in May 2022.
Just hours prior, Bolsonaro urged his backers to assemble on April 21.
Simultaneously, Brazil's communication minister Paulo Pimenta condemned Musk, emphasizing in uppercase that "social media platforms aren't beyond the law".
"We won't tolerate anyone, irrespective of their wealth and influence, disrespecting our nation," he appended.
Should X choose to defy the directive, the platform may face a temporary blockade, as outlined by Bruna Santos, the global campaigns manager at Digital Action, a nonprofit organization.
"Musk's actions seemed designed to challenge the Brazilian legal system," she remarked. "I believe there's a tangible risk of X being temporarily suspended."
