Currently portraying Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco in Netflix's "Griselda," Vergara deliberately seeks roles where her accent becomes an asset.
"I'm always on the lookout for characters because my options are limited due to this accent," she shared with The Los Angeles Times. "I can't take on roles like a scientist or be part of 'Schindler's List.' My acting opportunities are somewhat restricted." Inspired by the 2006 documentary "Cocaine Cowboys," Vergara conceived the idea of playing Blanco. Despite joining "Modern Family" in 2009, she kept Blanco in mind, consistently studying her character.
"I delved into every book, article, and online source that emerged over the years," Vergara revealed. Blanco, also known as La Madrina (Godmother) and La Viuda Negra (Black Widow), operated a cocaine ring until her demise in Medellín in 2012 at the age of 69.
"Griselda" is available for streaming on Netflix.
