Recently, Britney Spears' 2011 track "Selfish" from her seventh album "Femme Fatale" claimed the top spot on the US iTunes chart, overshadowing a new release with the same title from her former partner Justin Timberlake, who unveiled his "Selfish" track just a day earlier.

As of Saturday, Spears' song maintained its stronghold at the number two position on the chart, placing two spots ahead of Timberlake at number four.

Why is this noteworthy? Both a 2021 documentary titled "Framing Britney Spears" and a memoir by the singer published last year, titled "The Woman In Me," shed light on Spears' highly publicized, decades-old romance with Timberlake. The two, who co-starred on the Mickey Mouse Club as children, later dated from 1999 to 2002.

In her memoir, Spears discussed the public fallout of her relationship with Timberlake, revealing instances of infidelity on both sides. Contrary to public perception, Timberlake had not been faithful either, as Spears detailed in her memoir, and she was privy to his indiscretions.

Additionally, Spears opened up about having undergone an abortion during her relationship with Timberlake, a decision she claimed she "never would have made" if it were solely up to her. She expressed that it remains one of the most agonizing experiences of her life.

These revelations emerged two years after the "New York Times Presents" Hulu documentary "Framing Britney Spears," which reignited interest in her breakup with Timberlake. The documentary highlighted how Timberlake was portrayed more positively in the media narrative about their split, while Spears faced vilification.

In response to the documentary, Spears' dedicated fanbase, galvanized by the #FreeBritney movement during her 13-year-long conservatorship, called for an apology from Timberlake. He obliged days after the documentary's premiere, expressing regret on social media: "I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right. I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears."

Evidently, supporters of Spears continue to rally in solidarity with the "Piece of Me" singer.
