Miriam Linna from Norton Records confirmed the news to Rolling Stone on Friday. Norton Records published Weiss' sole solo album in 2007, titled "Riskful Game."

“Mary was an emblem, a hero, a heroine, to both young men and women of my generation and of all generations,” Linna conveyed to the publication.

CNN has contacted representatives for Weiss and Norton Records. The cause of death is not immediately available.

The Shangri-Las, hailing from Queens, New York, comprised Weiss, her sister Elizabeth, and another duo of sisters, Marge and Mary Ann Ganser.

Their notable hit songs include "Leader of the Pack" and "Remember (Strolling in the Shore)," later covered by Aerosmith and various other musical acts.

“Remember (Strolling in the Shore),” also known as “Remember,” was the band’s initial demo, composed by George “Shadow” Morton, and became a hit upon its 1964 release.

“Leader of the Pack,” released in 1964, achieved number one status. Both tracks featured on the Shangri-Las’ debut album, also named “Leader of the Pack,” released in 1965.

The record included other popular songs like “Give Him a Great Big Kiss.” Following their debut, the group released a second album in 1965 titled “Shangri-Las-65!”

Subsequently, the group disbanded due to legal issues. Weiss, reflecting on the end in 2007, told Rolling Stone, “When we started, it was all about music. By the time it ended, it was all about litigation.”

In 2007, she experienced a revival with the release of “Riskful Game.”

“Initially I didn’t know how I’d feel about recording again,” Weiss shared with the publication about her return to music after 40 years. “But when I walked back into the studio, I felt like I was home.”
