The Hamilton-born artist departed on Jan. 15 at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ont., as reported in an obituary released on Thursday.

She became a familiar presence in children's television programming during the '80s, not only shining on Daily Treasures but also gracing other Canadian classics such as Ramona, Polka Dot Door, Night Heat, and The Littlest Hobo.

"Her portrayal of Jodie was unquestionably her most treasured and significant professional experience," stated the obituary. "This was evident right up to her final moments, with admirers expressing how much she inspired and shaped their childhood."

Virgin's television journey continued in the late '80s and early '90s, during which she hosted and appeared on CTV and later on CBC.

She took the reins of Eye on Toronto, a current affairs program, and later ventured into politics by standing for the federal Liberal Party in the mid-2000s.

As the great-granddaughter of the escaped slave Thomas John Howard, Virgin played a pivotal role in incorporating Black history into the Hamilton school curriculum.

"Nerida believed in ensuring that her words, and more importantly, her actions, demonstrated the love she had for the people in her circle," her obituary recounted, emphasizing her passion for journalism, storytelling, and social justice.

"Incomparable, endlessly talented, and effortlessly funny, she brought joy to all who embraced her."

In 2016, Virgin was honored with a spot on the list of Canada's 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women.

"Nerida Virgin's contributions went beyond education and acting. As an insightful and dedicated journalist, she fearlessly pursued truth and aimed to amplify voices that often went unheard. Her discerning commentary and commitment to journalistic integrity made her a pillar in the community, leaving an enduring impact on how stories were told," the obituary read.

"If Nerida's message could be encapsulated in a Daily Treasures theme, today's special would be 'love.'"

Nina Keogh, Virgin's co-star in Daily Treasures, shared a touching tribute to her on Friday.

"7 years, 122 episodes, like a family we were," the puppeteer, who portrayed Muffy Mouse, posted on Instagram.

"She was talented, smart, sweet, and exquisitely beautiful. She could learn dialogue in seconds. She loved knitting at our table reads and brought in baked goodies. She had a crazy laugh. She was a good mum to all of her children. The #dailytreasures family has lost a precious member. RIPower."

Online, people extended their condolences, recalling fond memories of Virgin's impact on their childhoods.

"Thank you Nerida for brightening my childhood and adding whimsy to your cherished role as Jodie. You will always be a treasured part of that time, so thank you and rest in peace," wrote one person in the comments under her obituary.

"Daily Treasures was foundational Canadian kids TV and one of my earliest memories," shared another person.

"She taught many children of color that we could be the main character. That magic could happen to us. That Canada included us," another fan shared.

A celebration of life is scheduled for June 15, 2024, at Steward Memorial Church in Hamilton—the same church where her great uncle, John C. Holland, served as a pastor.
