Variety and Deadline reported on Thursday that the project is officially in the works, bringing together former co-stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie to produce the show.
David Henrie, aged 34, will not only produce but will also take the lead in the sequel, reprising his role as Justin Russo, the brotherly counterpart to Selena Gomez's Alex Russo. Gomez, now 31, is set to be an executive producer and will make a guest appearance as Alex in the already greenlit pilot episode.
Selena Gomez took to Instagram to confirm her involvement in the sequel shortly after the news broke on Thursday. She posted a photo of herself and Henrie on the set of 'Enchanters of Sundar Isle' with the caption, "We're back."
Henrie also shared the news on Instagram, posting a picture of the first page of the untitled pilot script. "The Russo's are excited to become a part of your family once again, but we've grown," he wrote. "2024, the year magic comes back!"
The pilot's cast already includes Janice LeAnn Brown, Alkaio Thiele, and Mimi Gianopulos.
According to the official description of the series, the sequel will follow an adult Justin Russo who has relinquished his magical wizarding powers to lead a normal human life with his wife (Gianopulos) and two sons (one played by Thiele).
"He gets a surprise when a powerful young wizard (Brown) in need of training shows up at his door," the description continued. "Justin must embrace his past to ensure the future of the Wizard World."
Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas have written the pilot and are also credited as executive producers. The duo, known for creating the Disney Channel spinoff 'Raven's Home,' earlier collaborated on the project.
Andy Fickman is set to direct the pilot and serve as an executive producer alongside Gomez, Henrie, Elinoff, Thomas, and Gary Marsh.
'Enchanters of Sundar Isle' holds a special place in the hearts of those who grew up watching Selena Gomez's magical adventures during the show's four seasons and a 2009 made-for-TV movie. The series aired from 2007 to 2012, growing alongside its audience as the three Russo siblings tackled both magical and non-magical challenges.
Naturally, after years of swirling rumors about a reboot, fans of the show are already buzzing with excitement over the pilot, with many expressing a strong desire for the series to star Gomez herself.
